Refrigerators / Fridge Freezers:

Refrigerators are essential kitchen appliances. The most popular and convenient refrigerators are side-by-side as opposed to the fridges that are shallower in depth than traditional models which makes it much easier to seek and reach for things stored at the back of the fridge.

In the past refrigerators had actual fridge part being on the bottom and the freezer on top or vice versa. This concept is all but gone now replaced by the side-by-side units. These are known in Ireland as American fridge-freezers and have become very popular in recent years. These are large compartmented freezer and fridge combinations complete with double doors. Water and ice dispensers on the outside of the door are very convenient and accessible.

Of course, there are much smaller refrigerators that are not so much kitchen appliances as back ups to hold such things as beer and more beer! Virtually all kitchen appliance manufacturers offer such smaller complimentary items.

For the larger family home, however, you may need more than the side-by-side fridge-freezer because of its obvious limits for larger storage.

Many homes will require a separate freezer if there lots of offspring to feed or if there is frequent entertaining. In this instance, you have to rely on the good old-fashioned chest freezer. Depending on the size of the house, a regular chest freezer can be put in the utility room off the kitchen. If you have a basement that is easily accessible then this is the ideal location. Not all homes in Ireland have basements however, and in most cases, the garage is the preferred option to place a freezer.

If this is your solution, it does have possible hygiene and health risks. It would be wise to seal it off from the rest of the garage and prevent pets and children from having access to it. The transfer of food from the garage to the kitchen also carries the same risks. If located in the garage, the freezer must be placed on wooden battens to ensure that moisture from the floor will not rust the base.

All the main appliance manufacturers, such as Zanussi, Philips and Beko, supply fridge freezers in Ireland. Sizes can vary from 20 cubic feet to 60 cubic feet with top or front load opening. They are a particularly good asset to have in farmhouses where the family may kill their own animals. A 60 cubic foot freezer full to the gills will last a good while in any family.
