Modern design in Irish kitchens tends to include a breakfast bar in a suitable corner if an island is not part of the kitchen design. As such this can be considered a kitchen furniture item rather than an intricate part of the overall layout. This may be a stand- alone piece of furniture or more likely an easily fixed corner piece that makes good use of space.
The amount of space you have to work with will determine what size this will be and what additional furniture you can fit in. Breakfast bars are generally higher than kitchen or dining tables and will of necessity have high stools rather than chairs. These can be tucked away underneath when not in use to save space.
