Kitchen Shapes

The shape of your room really dictates the layout of your kitchen. Basically though kitchen shapes fall into the following categories

L-SHAPE
As the name suggests the kitchen layout is in the shape of an L. This layout is the most optimal for a rectangular room where the width may not allow a centre island.  This layout has cupboards and worktops on two sides with a corner unit. The corner unit can be a carousel or a so called “magic corner” to maximize the availability of working and storage space.

GALLEY SHAPE
This layout is made up of two parallel counter surfaces that usually run the length of the kitchen. It is ideal for a narrow rectangular room that has the entrance at the narrow end or two entrances. This design is very common in apartment developments in Ireland.

U-SHAPE
The U shaped layout has cupboards and workspace on three adjoining sides rather than just on two as in the Galley Kitchen design. It is more efficient use of space. The construction of the property determines whether this can be incorporated. Again, this is a very common design feature in apartments.

G-SHAPE
This particular layout has work surfaces on two walls and a third coming off at an angle. This design is very appropriate where space is of a premium but there is adequate width in the room to facilitate it. This is a useful design for small townhouses and apartments.
