Kitchen Planning
As with every room in your house, planning is the key in the Kitchen Design .
A few key considerations are as follows:
The shape of the kitchen – this is usually determined by walls already built unless you are doing a new-build to your own specifications.
The work triangle of the kitchen – this is the relationship between sink, cooker and fridge.
Questions to be addressed
Is there anyone with special needs that might require adjustment to the height of work surfaces?
Is the kitchen going to be used for formal meals, entertaining and family recreation etc?
Is the kitchen going to be used mainly for food preparation and eating elsewhere?
Where is the light coming into the kitchen and is this sufficient to provide enough of natural light and still allow adequate cabinet and worktop space?
Are there exterior walls for aroma extraction?
Is there adequate TV points and broadband sockets for computers if the kitchen is going to be used in this way?
Is there a stove or range oven to be installed?
How do you ensure that the work triangle is kept clear of traffic?
What style of kitchen do you want, contemporary, country or modern? This may depend on the architectural features of the house.
Once you have thought about these factors it is a good idea to write them all down and think about them for a while. There are many images in our Gallery Section for you to browse through at your leisure to establish your preferences.
After this, it is a good idea to sketch the existing room showing as much information as possible. It doesn't have to be a work of art but just needs to give your kitchen manufacturer a rough guide to the layout of the room. You should, if possible, include walls, windows, doors, electrical points, sink location and metric measurements.
